How to Prepare Kava: A Simple, Traditional Water Method

A clear overview of the traditional straining method. Use your product’s own directions for the serving amount.

Before you start

You will need kava powder, a suitable strainer bag, a bowl, cool or room-temperature water, and a cup or shell. Check your product packaging for its specific directions.

Ritualt’s recommended powder amount has not been confirmed here. Until a final label is available, this guide does not suggest a dose.

The water and strainer method

Times and preparation directions can differ. Follow the instructions that come with your product.

  • Measure only the amount directed on the final product label.
  • Place the powder in a strainer bag and set the bag in a bowl of cool or room-temperature water.
  • Knead the bag under water; traditional preparations strain the root rather than simply stir it in.
  • Squeeze the bag, remove the spent root, and pour the strained drink into a cup or shell.

Take care

Do not drive or operate machinery after drinking kava, and do not combine kava with alcohol. Adults only. Read the responsible-use information and talk with a healthcare professional if you have a health question.
